New Year's is traditionally a time for fresh starts and what better way to ring in 2023 than to finally start your application for Italian citizenship by descent. Perhaps you've only just learned about the possibility or maybe you’ve known about it for awhile but just haven’t been able to wrap your head around the complex application process. Why is Italian citizenship so popular?

You already know that Italy is a spectacularly beautiful country rich in culture and history, but did you also know that an Italian passport is one of the most powerful passports in the world (currently ranked at #2)?

Claiming your dual Italian citizenship comes with a lot of tangible benefits, especially since Italian citizens are also EU citizens. This gives Italian citizens access to not only Italy to live, work, and study without cumbersome and hard-to-get visas, but also the rest of the EU as well! Affordable healthcare is a benefit at the top of many peoples’ lists, as is affordable/free post-secondary tuition. And don’t forget that, as an Italian citizen, you no longer have any time/movement restrictions within the Schengen Zone, which means you have the freedom to stay in member countries without having to leave (non-EU citizens can only stay in member countries, including Italy, for 90 out of every 180 days). And the best part? If you’re eligible for Italian citizenship by descent, so are your children, grandchildren, and so on, so all of these benefits extend to future generations too! Talk about a treasure trove of opportunity!

Just as important (or maybe more importantly for some people) is that Italian citizenship allows you to reconnect with your Italian roots. It allows you to immerse yourself in the culture, the language - the food and wine - and even connect with long-lost family. It also gives you the opportunity to restore your family’s lost Italian citizenship - a beautiful homage to your ancestors that left Italy and sacrificed so much to provide better opportunities for themselves and their families. How incredible would it be to come full circle?

If you already know you’re eligible, your next step is going to be determining where you’re applying. Application requirements vary drastically depending on location, so it’s important to have this step figured out first before you waste time and money collecting records you don’t need (or worse, not collecting things you should be).

• Are you applying at a consulate? Which consular jurisdiction do you fall under?
• Are you applying directly in Italy? If so, which comune?
• Do you have a 1948/other judicial case? Your direction will need to come from your lawyer.
